Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in The Gambia
Welcome to The Gambia, also known as The Smiling Coast of Africa!
Upon arrival at Banjul International Airport, you'll be transferred to your accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, there may still be an opportunity to explore the surroundings and get your first taste of West Africa's relaxed atmosphere.
Overnight in the Banjul area.
Day 2: Banjul and the Colourful Albert Market
Today you'll explore Banjul, the capital of The Gambia. Although it's a relatively small city, there's plenty to discover. For geocachers, there's an extra special highlight: the opportunity to search for the oldest geocache in The Gambia!
A visit to the lively Albert Market is a must. Here you'll find a colourful mix of fabrics, spices, vegetables, handmade products and everyday goods. It's the perfect place to experience local life up close.
Explore the area around Arch 22 and wander through the streets where daily life unfolds.
Day 3: Everyday Life in The Gambia
Today is all about discovering more of The Gambia. Head towards the coast, visit local villages or get to know the traditional fishing communities.
In the Bakau area, you could visit the famous Kachikally Crocodile Pool. The fishing harbours and local markets also offer a fascinating glimpse into everyday life.
A day filled with encounters, little discoveries and authentic African atmosphere.
Day 4: Crossing the Gambia River and Travelling to Senegal
Today marks the beginning of one of the most memorable stages of the journey.
From Banjul, you'll take the local ferry across the impressive Gambia River to Barra. The crossing is an experience in itself. Surrounded by local travellers, traders and vehicles, you'll get a real sense of everyday life along this important transport route.
From Barra, you'll continue north towards the Senegalese border. After completing the border formalities, the landscape gradually changes as you make your way to Toubakouta, on the edge of the beautiful Sine-Saloum Delta.
You'll spend the next four nights here, surrounded by a completely different landscape.
Day 5: Exploring the Mangroves of the Sine-Saloum Delta
Today is all about nature.
The Sine-Saloum Delta is a vast area of waterways, islands, mangrove forests and small fishing villages. On an optional boat excursion aboard a traditional pirogue, you'll navigate narrow waterways and discover the region's fascinating ecosystem.
Along the way, you may spot a wide variety of bird species while enjoying the peaceful surroundings and beautiful scenery.
A wonderful day for nature lovers and anyone who enjoys exploring off the beaten track.
Day 6: Authentic Villages and Local Culture
Time to discover more of everyday life around Toubakouta.
Visit small villages, meet local people and learn how traditions and daily life are closely connected to the delta.
Depending on your interests, a walking tour, cycling excursion or locally guided activity can be arranged.
The local cuisine is also worth exploring. Enjoy a traditional Senegalese meal and discover the flavours of West Africa.
Day 7: Nature and Adventure Around Toubakouta
Another day to explore this remarkable region at your own pace.
You could choose another boat trip, visit a nearby nature reserve or explore the surrounding villages and markets.
For those who enjoy being active, there are plenty of opportunities for walking, birdwatching and discovering hidden places.
Or simply relax by the water and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.
Day 8: From Toubakouta to Dakar
Today you'll leave the peaceful Sine-Saloum Delta behind and travel north towards Dakar.
Along the way, the scenery gradually changes as small villages give way to busier towns and lively roads.
Upon arrival in Dakar, you'll discover a completely different side of Senegal. This vibrant capital combines African traditions with modern city life, colourful markets, music and a spectacular location on the Atlantic Ocean.
Overnight in Dakar.
Day 9: Dakar and Île de Ngor
Today you'll explore Dakar and its fascinating surroundings.
One of the highlights is Île de Ngor, a small island just off the coast, reached by a traditional boat. Here you'll discover narrow streets, colourful houses, local artists and a laid-back atmosphere, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the capital.
For geocachers, this island is particularly special, as it's home to the oldest geocache in Senegal. A great opportunity to add a little geocaching history to your journey!
The beaches and coastal surroundings of Ngor are also well worth exploring.
If you'd like to discover more of Dakar, you could visit the impressive African Renaissance Monument or one of the city's lively markets.
Day 10: Along the Atlantic Coast to Toubab Dialaw
After the hustle and bustle of Dakar, you'll travel to Toubab Dialaw, a charming coastal village south of the capital.
The village is known for its relaxed atmosphere, colourful houses, artistic character and beautiful location on the Atlantic Ocean.
Take a walk along the beach, explore the little streets or enjoy one last Senegalese meal overlooking the sea.
A lovely way to end a journey full of contrasts.
Day 11: Departure
Depending on your flight schedule, there may still be time for a relaxed breakfast or a final walk.
You'll then be transferred to Dakar's international airport for your return flight.
